Editor Help Section - Photo Album & a Few Tips & Tricks for a Professional Looking Website

Tips & Tricks for a Professional Looking Site:

1. Do not underline text for emphasis, people usually expect underlined words to be a link. For emphasis use the bold option or one of the headings.
2. Do not use all caps for your text, all caps on the web means you are shouting. Caps for short titles are acceptable.
3. Do not center a whole page of text as it is hard to read, the mind has to work at making sense of it, because we do not actually read every word, we have a tendency to scan and when it isn't in a straight up and down format it confuses. Titles and headings are ok for centering.
4. Do not write in paragraph format:
A wall of text is deadly for an interactive experience.Write for online, not print. To draw users into the text and support reader scannability, use these well-documented tricks:
   • subheadings
   • bulleted lists
   • short paragraphs with vertical space between
   • a simple writing style.
5. Don't use PDF Files for general pages of your web site.
PDF files cause a discord in web browsing. They change the abilities of the web browser with simple things like printing or saving documents. Convert any information that needs to be browsed or read on the screen into real web pages. PDF files work great for content that needs to be printed.
6. Do not upload huge images, resize them for faster download. People still use dialup to access the internet and some images take 10 minutes or more to download. You will lose your visitors, as most won't wait! There are thousands of other sites out there that are in competition with you, don't give them the edge.

Photo Album:

*Very Important* - Please never disable your password or anyone can click the edit link and edit and add to your album. You can change your password as you like.

Click on Admin at the bottom of your photo thumbnails. Enter your password, click continue. It's fairly self explanatory as to what the options are.
New Album: Type name for new album click Make New Album
Edit an album: choose which one to edit in the drop down boxes. Click Go
View Album: takes you to the regular viewing of the album, you will have to click the admin again to go back to edit that album. Remove Album: all can be deleted except the one that says Home, that is the main gallery page.

If you have a double name for the album when you go to the main gallery page, edit the home page and remove the doubled name in the caption box. You can also change the name of the gallery here, or add a separate caption for the album cover pictures.

You can set any picture in an album to be the cover picture for that particular album. Checkmark the picture you want "set as album cover" and click update.
When you select a new pic to be the new "album cover" it doesn't appear right away:
Reason: The image is cached in your browser, and I think PHP caches it too.
Solution: Click refresh on your browser after setting a new "album cover"

Sizing Images for your album:
Size your images for the Album's large view, not thumbnail size, the album automatically thumbnails them for you and sorts them, see sorting. A good size for your large horizontal images is around 500 pixels wide. The album will automatically make your thunbnails for you and sort them. A good little free program for resizing images can be found here.

Upload your large view images through the album upload option. Remember to resize your images for web use to the size you want for the large album view and optimize as a jpg. The Album will not work with a windows bitmap or gif. It must be a jpg. Your images will be automatically thumbnailed for the thumbnail view.

Enter a caption for pictures in the text box below the picture you want to add a caption for, click the update button below the caption box. Add captions one at a time and click update for each separate photo. The caption box must have something in it. It automatically adds the name of the picture file.

To delete a photo checkmark the delete image check box below the picture you want to delete.

On Sorting:
The sorting is based on alph-numeric consideration. In other words, file names with number are shown first, then files are displayed alphabetically. Example:
pic1.jpg
pic2.jpg
pic3.jpg
picA.jpg
picB.jpg
picC.jpg
picD.jpg
picE.jpg
Now, as a workaround, if you want to change the order of the list above you can simply change the file names by putting a number in front like so:
1_picD.jpg
2_pic3.jpg
3_pic1.jpg
4_picA.jpg
5_pic2.jpg
6_picC.jpg
7_picB.jpg
8_picE.jpg
Or as another workaround if you want certain images together but you have some already up and you want to add others to it.
1_pic5
1_pic5_1
pic1
pic1_1
pic1_2
pic1_3
pic2

Editor Help File

The editor works just like a word processor, so if you are familiar with that, you shouldn't have too many problems at all. Only difference between a word processor and this editor is to remember that web pages are not set widths, so try not to position images or text using the space bar. This will result in a page layout that looks funny in other people's browser and may cause sideways scrolling for some visitors, users hate scrolling left to right, let it wrap naturally on the editor page, which in turn it will wrap naturally on the web page.

To see your changes how they will look on your regular pages, toggle to this page and click on the page you want to see the changes on.

Please Note! Do NOT use Microsoft Word to copy and paste your text content of your pages, you will override all the programing for your site and may cause your website to have error messages in place of your pages, or it will quit working entirely! You can use Notepad or just type your text directly into your editor pages. There may be charges to fix your site if it is due to not following the above recommendations.

**Editing Options: Back to top

Align/Indent (Aligning text and images)
Single Line Break
Change text on page
Fonts (Font styles, paragraphs, headings, align/indent)
Inserting an image
Centering an image on the page
Deleting an image
Modifying an image (only pertains to alignment, alternate text, borders)
Linking text or image
Email link
Horizontal rule or divider

To align text left or right, use the Align/Indent option. To Align images left or right see Modifying Images below. Also no images or a string (all on one line) of images wider than the sample line below. You may use spaces in between images that are on a row, but together no wider than the line below which is 527 pixels wide.

This is important for the look of your layout so that it flows with your visitor's browser resolution and is compatible with any 800x600 browser window or larger. **

Do not use the enter key unless you want to start a new paragraph, the text will automatically wrap in the space it has and will adjust on the web page itself to accommodate any browser window. See also single line space.

** Very Important ** If you want your text or any images to be in the center of the page please use the Alignment option, highlight your text or image(s) and choose "center" in your Align/Indent drop down box. Do Not Use Spaces (space bar) to align text or images to center, left or right. It will throw your layout out of balance and make it look funny in some browsers, even though it looks fine for you.

To start a new line (a single line break) without starting a new paragraph (a two line break), hold down the shift key and hit your enter key. This gives a single line break. Sometimes your cursor will still appear to be on the same line if you are doing a single line break right after an image, but once you start typing it will jump one line down making the single line break.

To change the text already written, just highlight and type over. You may copy and paste text from notepad. Be careful to not paste from a word document as it will pick up your formatting including text sizes, colors etc. which will interfere with the css style sheet where all your formatting for your web page is. If you need text size or color changes just let me know, I'd be happy to make any changes you request.

(Please remember to optimize or downsize the image for web use! If you do not have an image editor or web optimizer, there is a great little free program available here, called Irfanview, along with a tutorial on how to use it at the bottom of the page.) Double click the image or click on 'Open' your image will preview and you can click the 'Upload Image' button. When your image has uploaded you will see a 'Finish' button, click and it will return you to the insert image dialogue box. You are now able to find the image you just uploaded, choose the 'Insert Image' button and your image should appear in your page editor.

To change one image for another, you must first delete the image from the page (place your cursor on the right side of the image and backspace) and then go to insert image, choose your image from the image drop down box. Click on the image you wish to align left, right or add alternate text, then choose 'Modify' from the 'Images' drop down box. Here you will see the path to your image, (where it is located). In the 'Alternate Text' box, type a name for your image or place a few keywords for the search engines pertaining to the image or page. Make sure you place a (zero) 0 in the border thickness area, which is important to not have a border show up if you use the image as a hyperlink. A, zero (0) should already be in your other two choices, this is the default choice, it is ok to leave.

Here you can also choose an alignment, as in text top, left, right, middle, absmiddle, bottom, absbottom, or not set, which is the default.

Middle and absmiddle pertain to vertical alignment of your image to your text, to set an image to horizontal middle (Center of page), use the Align/Indent drop down box and pick center alignment. You must click on, or highlight the image and/or text you want to align to center, left or right.

Click 'OK'
